Slow Network - How to reduce lag on MMORPGs?

I'm on a shared network and experience tons of lag while playing MMORPGs. When playing the same game on my home network with the same computer, I never experience lag, so I'm guessing the slowness is coming from the connection. Is there a method I can use to speed up the connections or reduce the lag on the shared network?

1. Not really everyone has there piece of bandwidth on a shared net
2. The only thing I can think of that would help is: A-Get people off of the shared network. B-Get the shared network a faster connection.
3. the only thing that might help is turning all the video options down to there lowest setting and not running ANY other programs on your compy at the same time ( I mean really try and turn off stuff you arn't usuing, IM, small stuff what ever ) but no you'll probably still get lagg unless you manage to kick other people off the network. sorry. it sucks.
