Can using skype over a network cause game lag?

If I make a call to someone on the same local network as myself with Skype, does the connection go through the the modem, or just the router? What about with a conference call between 2 people on the same network and one person on an outside connection, is there more than one connection going through the modem, or is it consolidated into one connection through the modem to the one person outside the network? Hope that makes sense. I understand that I don't have unlimited bandwidth on my internet connection, but I want to know if skype will even connect to the internet or not if I call someone on the same local network as myself.

1. Using any program that uses the internet while playing a game can cause game lag. All applications share the limited bandwidth of your internet service. It's not limitless. If you're using skype to communicate with other game players, you may have better luck using something like "Ventrilo" instead: http://www.ventrilo.com/ Ventrilo gives excellent voice quality and doesn't seem to tax your internet connection as much as skype does.
