How can I reduce lag when I play games on a wireless network?

Sometimes when I browse the web or play games, the internet slows down a bit, even though I have a high speed internet connection and an excellent 54Mbps wifi connection. How can I reduce gaming lag and speed up my wifi? Also, the wifi router I am using is a westell that I got from verizon. As I have heard from people, it is a really great router that has better functioning than most common wifi routers.

1. get a netgear that support 108mbps (network traffic only ) you might have to buy and adapter that supports 108mbps as well.
