- On the wireless router, you need to setup security. WEP should do.
- Read the manual for the router, they are all different. Log into it with a web browser and go to wireless security. Set an encryption key using WPA or 128 bit WEP. You must do this using a wired connection, or the wireless will shut you out before you complete the changes. You then need to use the wireless connection program on the computer to search for your router, set a matching key and connect.
- Simply put go into your wireless setup and find your general setup/security and find wpa or wep or wpa2 the most secure is wpa2 but it doesn't work with all older operating systems or computer routers ( i believe) wep works with most except Mac's so if you want to. but wpa works with almost every thing and is reasonably secure I suggest that. Make sure you copy down your password for your wireless or you will be stuck out of it, also for some routers you can do this while connected wirelessly just you will be locked out when the password is set and need to connect again after. but some you will not be able to do wirelessly so it is better to connect with a wire Your network setup will probably be something like http://192.168.2.1/ http://192.168.0.1/ or there are many others check your manual of your wireless router hope this helps
- You'll need to check your routers manual but yes, activate Wireless security so a key/password is needed to access your wireless network. WPA is better, but even WEP eliminates random passers-by or neighbors looking for a free signal to leech. If your router supports it, you can turn on MAC address filtering as part of your wireless security- this limits access to wireless adapters whose NIC addresses you've specifically entered. The Router IP address is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 - check your TCP/IP settings, whatever is listed as your default gateway, that's the router's address. And yes, to handle router configuration, connect with a regular patch cable (wired).
