Speed Up Your Internet Connection

How can I use the internet on my laptop (wifi) as a adsl modem and connect to a belkin router?

My laptop has internet through wifi and I want to share it with my pc and iphone (their wifi are not strong enough to pick up the access point.) I have a belkin router. So, can I make my ethernet connection on my laptop as an adsl modem and connect to the router? Thanks.

  1. Possibly, depending on the router. If the router has an Ethernet WAN connection then it is possible but difficult. You will need to understand IP subnet addressing and DHCP. It is not possible to connect your laptop to the router using an ADSL connection.
  2. Something like Steve said your going to have to out put through a ethernet port and import from your wifi card. Your computer will become like a gateway router to your internet router for your other computers etc. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:UIAPGGkDPr0J:www.linux-magazine.com/w3/issue/01/FREESCO_Gateway.pdf+turn+computer+into+gateway+router&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a
  3. No. A router requires the proper DSL connection. If you are getting a wifi connection but do not have a broadband connection of your own, you must be illegally connecting to somebody else's open wireless. This carries fines in the thousands, and up to 5 years in prison for each time connecting for each machine, unless you have express consent of the owner AND their ISP. It also means all your transmissions can be read by any local wireless machine. This means all your clear text user names, passwords, emails and sites visited become public.
  4. I gather you have this ADSL modem. Sounds like you already have a wifi router and there is a wire between the modem and the WAN port of the Modem. Then you connect your laptop to the wifi router with your laptops wifi adapter. So it seems the problem is that your PC has a wifi card but it it so far from the wifi router that it cannot connect due to walls, floors etc in between. Is that what you are saying? If so, then in most cases the PC's PCI card has an external antenna that can be removed and replaced and this will help receive a weak signal. There are several on this page http://www.nextag.com/hawking-wifi-antennas?nxtg=11d30a240525-912D91774B50F921
  5. Connect the laptop to router Bridge wired and wireless connections Done!
